Beatrice

Hello! I'm Beatrice Cesonyte (she/her) - the person responsible for making this website, and creating the browser extension. I'm years old, and I've been into programming and IT since I was 10 years old (feels like a lifetime ago...). Before this project, I've worked on a couple fun projects (which you can read about on my own website, here), but mostly focused on competitive programming quite recently, thanks to UCC's MPT courses providing lots of encouragement towards the competitive programming field (I've got what it takes, they thought!). I was in the Irish team for the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) in the Netherlands this year (2024), and hope to stay on the team until I finish secondary school!

Now that we've entered SciFest and even BT Young Scientists, I have never enjoyed using my skills more. I haven't really created projects which can make a difference in the world, and it's cool that after all of these years, I can finally help to make a difference. Especially since issues about manosphere content are only rising and getting worse, and there are few filtering services out there which can help prevent such large exposure. Of course, this project wouldn't have happened without my best friend, so I really should be giving her a lot of the credit - I wouldn't have thought of such an awesome project :)

Don't forget - stay safe out there, we can't prevent everything bad from coming to you ;)

Amélie

My name is Amélie Nolan (she/they) - the researcher and analyser of this project! I'm years old, and have been fascinated with the psychological side of sciences for the past couple of years, but especially social and political issues. I could spend hours listening to video essays by the dozen on a variety of subjects, from gender to politics to space, but in recent months toxic masculinity and the manosphere have become more and more prevalent in the content I view.

After discovering the creator Will Hitchens and looking into the 2014 case of Elliot Roger, the subject of how manosphere influencers influence young people has been nagging at the back of my mind, and it came to me one day—on the way back from when my sister competed in BT Young Scientist last year, in fact—that manosphere content could have serious impacts on boy's mental health.

Mental health is a subject that is very important to me due to personal experiences and I have developed a passion for advocating for the betterment of mental health for young people, seeing as, having been through the system myself, in Ireland it is not great. This project is more than just a project for me; it's a passion project—a presentation of one of the things that I care about most in life. Despite our small size of our work due to not being professionals, I hope deeply that this project will begin the work of building awareness of manosphere content not only for young people but for their parents and adults all around the world too.

Thank you to my best friend Beatrice for putting up with my silly, special-interest induced antics; and thank you for supporting us and visiting our website. You are helping not only helping two young, passionate people pursue something special to them, but potentially people all around the world.

Stay safe; and don't panic!
